Food Wastage

June 2020

“There are roughly up to 1.3 billions tonnes of excellently edible food get wasted or lost each year worldwide. Consumers should be aware of this issue and take this problem seriously. Meanwhile, Australia wastes over 5 millions tonnes of food, ending up going to the landfill.”

What matters the most ??

Food wastage is a worldwide phenomenon, affecting developing and developed countries in different ways. It is considerably growing and has a hidden influence on food security and the environment is threatening. Although several Australians like a leftover, repurposing food and spending on the groceries as little as possible.  However, Most of the Australian citizens do not have much awareness of how the food is being wasted. The 35 % of an average household trash can is food waste on the report of EPA website, spending at least AUD279  per week on food and drink. Thinking about throwing over 1000 dollars of groceries annually, people should be even conscious of their own buying habit as well as reusing the leftovers instead of bulking more food.

Which should we act first?

I think that we should be more aware of wasting food problems. When we ordered the food in the restaurant or eating buffet, we should think about how much food we actually need to eat, considering the portions of the meal. It is vital that everyone needs to think before we take action and take full responsibility for the consequences.

What is feasible?

To reduce food wastage, here are the methods we could simply do:

  • Planing the meals before cooking it, thinking how many ingredients are actually needed, checking the kitchen to make sure all the veggies are out of demand
  • If it is possible, choosing the food with the least amount of package for reducing the plastic recycling issues as well. ( Package also requires water to produce )
  • Storing the food correctly and properly
  • Using the leftover to cook some creative meals
  • Supporting the food charity organization ( like OZHarvst ), going to the resued food market and getting the food you actually need
  • When eating in the restaurant, ordering the proper proportion

What is the problem?

Food and water consumption is a crucial part of human life. Without consuming enough food, the human would not be able to have adequate energy for work and may depart life. According to OZHarvest, Australians throws out around 20 billions of food per year that means four million tonnes of eatable food is in the landfill annually. Wasting food remains negative emotions as well as puts the devastating pressure on the environment. When our food ends up in the landfill, it could not be decomposed naturally. As a result, it would emit methane, greenhouse gas, which is harmful to the environment and the lasting player in climate change. he U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization stated that 30 per cent of food in the supply chain is wasted around the world, in other words, it contributes 8 per cent of overall global greenhouse gas emission. Food production also requires a huge amount of resources so that while wasting food, it means we waste the inputs used in production and all the resources are lost and misspend.

Why is it happening?

I think Australians are not intentionally wasting food. For instance, some people might sometimes forget the vegetables that they bought and still had them in the fridge, then kept buying another one. When I did some surveys about the way that how to determine people waste food. Mostly, people waste food in the restaurant, ordering the whole set or huge portion without thinking about if they are able to finish it. However, we are seeing the increase of food wastage every year. This does not only deteriorate the potential hunger problem in Australia but also brings the essential impact and pressure on the environment.

Who is the audience?

I believed that everyone from all parts of the food chain must need to work together so as to cut down the wastage of food, involving farm, foodservice sectors, various food industries, healthcare, and household. In addition, food wastage is pricey and it places harassment on environmental resources, such as energy and water. These resources are required to produce, transport, and sell food. Once we waste every one tonne of food that is sent to the landfill, the leftover would emit carbon dioxide to the environment. As the developed movement of food consumption, I think most people are aware of this issue more than before. Reducing food wastage is the simple thing which could be done by individuals or households, like composting, recycling, and reusing the leftover in other places.

Here are the examples and ideas I want to do :
  • The series of posters ( the good way for advertising / Not only could put in on the wall, but it could also be a digital poster and put it in the social media  )
  • The animated video ( About wasting food, increase the human conscious)
  • The website ( Showing the database of the food-wastage impact )
  • The interview video ( Interviewing people who contribute the work for helping food-waste problem )
  • The short comic ( drawing the series of comics and design it as the small sticker, then it could be placed anywhere, such as a school for educating students)

In this project, when I did the researches at the beginning, I do not have many ideas about what I could make for my final result. Then, I tried to understand how food-wastage have a significant impact on our lives, such as the consequences, emotions, and feelings, environment. After the investigation, I found out that the food wastage does not just the straightforward issue, there are a variety of problems could be affected in succession. We could not merely think about the basic consequences, there are also many side effects. Wasting food also wastewater, release Methane, and harms biodiversity. Moreover, this issue makes human feel pain, guilt and upset. To stop food-wastage, I believe that the changes have to be brought in at every stage of the process- from the community, restaurant, and company to individual. As the first step, priority should be given to balancing production with demand. This essentially translates to lesser use of natural resources to produce food which is not in demand.

How have key principles and methods used in the field of design thinking been evident in the project for you?
In my opinion, Design thinking is a part of what goes through the mind from designers in every independent project. I think it could be driven a brand, company business or a person forward emphatically and experimentation to arrive at innovative solutions. I use design thinking as the process when doing this project.  The progress of design thinking is the process from ideas of solution the part to learning work. In my process of doing this project, the first step is defining the problem and understanding the situation by doing a lot of research. I started to investigate this topic, and did a survey from friends and classmates in order to get the feedback. The second step of the process is thinking about the idea. Finding the idea for solving the problem is not easy, so I could formulate the hypothesis. It helps me to develop next step. Finally, the final step is coming up with the solution. This is how I implement my design thinking and put it into practice.

What are the key moments of insight you have gained in the project? ( Here you can refer to particular activities, readings or collaboration. )

In order to gain insight, I think the best way will be reading a lot and doing various research so that I could extend my knowledge in this area. When I got trouble to make the journey map, I searched for some examples and asked my friend how they will feel if they see the poster. If I stuck in one step, I inquire about the suggestions for stimulating my idea and thoughts. I think to work as a designer, it is important to understand what people demand and how to solve the problem effectively. Moreover, the human-center design is the core, I think it’s a framework for understanding, defining, and addressing problems. If you need to address the problems, we need to understand how people think and what could be improved in life of this society.

Describe design thinking. How do you now understand this and how is this relevant to your own design practice?

Design thinking is a way for people to define a problem find solution and face prototype their own ideas. I think when having the new project need to be designed, we require to have the certain process to conduct it. We could not just guess and design it without clues and research. Without enough research, we would not have enough evidence to persuade our audience and customer. For example, while doing this project, I could not be subjective. It is necessary to provide a logical, convincing, and effective proposal to the consumer by showing sufficient data, statistics, and evidence.
